North Indian and South Indian kundali charts

Same data, two layouts

A kundali records the sign of each planet and of the ascendant (lagna). The North Indian and South Indian styles hold identical data; only the arrangement differs.

North Indian: houses fixed

The square is divided by both diagonals and by a diamond joining the midpoints of the sides, giving 12 regions. The top central diamond is always house 1; houses run anticlockwise. Each house is labelled with its sign number: house h holds sign ((ascendant sign + h − 1) mod 12) + 1, where 1 = Aries.

South Indian: signs fixed

A 4 × 4 grid with the central 2 × 2 left empty gives 12 boxes. Pisces is always top-left; signs run clockwise (Aries, Taurus, Gemini along the top). The ascendant is marked in its sign box, conventionally with a diagonal line; houses are counted from there.

In Jyotishya

Your birth chart (Rasi, D1) and Navamsa (D9) can be drawn in either style from the same calculated positions. Planet abbreviations: Su, Mo, Ma, Me, Ju, Ve, Sa, Ra, Ke; R marks retrograde.
